The Book Nook from the Windham Public Library by Laurel Parker
Bedtime
Math at bedtime? You bet! The Windham Public Library had been hosting Bedtime Math Parties (May 15 and June 26) where children and parents come together to see how much fun math can be. Bedtime Math, whose goal it is “to make math a fun part of kids’ everyday lives” released their first book on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. One hundred fun and wacky math informational pieces are included with levels for wee ones (finger counting), little kids, and big kids. At www.bedtimemath.org a new piece is sent out each afternoon at 4 p.m. You can sign up to have it delivered right into your email in time for the whole family to take part. Occasionally there’s even a “Sky’s the Limit” for advanced mathematicians who like a challenge. The June 19 piece featured a video from The Piano Guys thanks to the input of the Miller family from Windham. The book will soon be added to the collection at the library.
Butterflies
Real butterflies in the library? Yes, for the past five years monarch butterflies have been raised in the children’s room thanks to funding from Cornerstones of Science. This year the Friends of the Windham Public Library are sponsoring them in August. They are also providing the funds for 12 local families to be able to raise two or three monarchs from second or third instar to full maturity, tag them, and release them at home which takes about four weeks. Approximately 72 will arrive during the first full week of August. If you are interested in being a foster butterfly family please register as soon as possible with the children’s room. You can call Mrs. Parker or Mrs. Currier at 892-1908, or stop by the desk and ask to be put on the list. Priority will be given to families who were not a part of the foster program last year. We will keep a list of folks who have done it before in case we need their help, too.
Other things to take part in at the library in July are the scavenger hunt, Peter Boie’s magic show, author Brenda Reeves Sturgis’ visit and the ice cream party. Check out the calendar online or in the library. Hope to see you at the library soon.
The Windham Public Library is located at 217 Windham Center Road and opens every day at 9:30 a.m. Closing times vary, check at www.windham.lib.me.us for more details.
