Beginning
next week (Jan. 19), The Windham Eagle will inaugurate a new series of articles
on the history of Windham and surrounding region. The new feature, called, “A
Matter of the Historical Record”, will run bi-monthly and highlight the
fascinating events and unique characters that gave birth and spurred the growth
of a tiny settlement on the east shore of the Presumpscot River, first known as
New Marblehead.
The
stories will reveal the resilience and fortitude of our early pioneers,
conflicts with the Sebago natives, the town’s transformation from agricultural
and manufacturing to tourist mecca; and the courage and determination of the
men and women who made it happen.
The
series will begin with a two-part feature on the native population that
inhabited the area before and after Windham’s first settlers.
The
series will be researched and written by The Windham Eagle staff writer Walter
Lunt.
